She ran.
Her heart racing faster than her body. She should have been there by now, but she got hung up. This was all a secret and no one could know what was happening. But this was a big night, the biggest night so far. And she didn't want to miss it. She couldn't miss it.
It was already past midnight and she was late.
She ran. Dodging fallen tree limbs, she ran though the forest at the end of town. It took so long to excuse herself from the family function. It was her little brother's birthday. She had to act like she cared, act like his 21'st birthday was a momentous occasion. But the entire night, her mind was on where she would be going and what she would be doing. She smiled at her brother and wished him well, but there was no feeling behind it. She just wanted to leave. She had things to do.
She ran. Finally getting to the open field. She was almost at her destination. She had the KeyStone. She had to go home and get it before embarking on this journey. It was too big and too important to take to the party. Besides, she had such nosy family members who would have been looking for excuses to go through anything she brought with her. She was such an enigma to them. And now that she lived alone, she never invited them over. She never talked to them about her personal life. But they kept prying. She wanted to kill them. She looked forward to the day she could. She had a special torture planned for each of them. But for now she had to keep up appearances. So she had to leave the party and go home to pick up the KeyStone. And to make sure none of them followed her. Perhaps she was being paranoid but she couldn't afford anything going wrong tonight. She'd worked to hard to get all of the pieces in place.
But if she got there too late, if she missed the moment of alignment it would all have been for nothing.
They couldn't have the ceremony without her. She had the KeyStone. The runes carved into it were necessary to unlock his prison and open the doorway for him to enter this world. As the only woman in the order who could read the runes she had risen quickly through the ranks. Now as Oracle of the order, she had seen this day in her dreams and she had been manipulating things to bring this about. And all of that could have been undone because of her family. She would kill them one day. And she would enjoy it.
She crossed the field, ran along side the stream and came to a barn in the middle of nowhere. She could see lights glowing inside. She hear the chanting, low and deep. She could feel it resonating within her. She could feel it resonating in the KeyStone in her backpack. She could finally stop. She took off the backpack and pulled out her robes. They were ornate, blood red with gold stitching. The designs on the robe signified her rank and purpose in the order. After she put on the robes she pulled out the KeyStone from the backpack. It had started glowing, as if darkness could glow. She could feel the power of the stone as it vibrated as if it was chanting with those inside.
She walked towards the doors of the barn and they began to open on their own. The doors knew she was coming. They knew why she was there. They knew she was carrying the KeyStone and couldn't be bothered with the task of opening them, so they opened themselves. Everyone turned and watched her enter. They watched the KeyStone enter. The glow of darkness captivated them. The high priests and priestesses were already in a circle, standing just around the edge of the magikal circle.
Now it was time. As she took her place in the circle, her eyes turned red. She felt exhilarated and she smiled a ominous smile. The great demon Voliac would be welcomed into this world.
